Mango is a very busy 4 year old Cairn Terrier who was found on the side of the road in a ditch in Fort Worth, Texas in late 2013. She was picked up by the city’s animal control, and dropped at the local kill shelter. After looking at all of her broken bones, the vet at the shelter gave her 6-9 months to live. Luckily, Mango was pulled by the angels at Emma’s Rescue, and eventually adopted to her forever home with Judy Walter.
After multiple tests and many examinations, they determined that the damage to her little body is irreversible. She had suffered a fractured back and pelvis and will never walk or run again. But that hasn’t stopped her! After becoming a certified therapy dog, Mango is rolling in gift giving. Gifting mobility to others in need has become a mission in itself.
Mango first contacted our company in October of 2014 with hopes of donating a wheelchair to a 3.5 lb Chihuahua, Cindy, who was handicapped. Apparently, it was Mango’s birthday, and Mango asked, that for her birthday, that Cindy receive a wheelchair to better her quality of life.
Mango had been rollin’ in a Ruff Rollin’ Wheelchair for the previous 8 months, so the natural choice was to purchase a Ruff Rollin’ Wheelchair for Cindy. Mango’s dedicated friends jumped at the chance to help another dog receive a wheelchair, and the donations poured in. We received enough money in two hours to pay for Cindy’s wheelchair.
It was in November, that Mango’s Freedom Wheels was born. Mango asked our company to be the soul provider of wheelchairs for handicapped dogs and to help their families in need that would not otherwise have been able to afford it. In the last 20 months, Mango has provided over 150 wheelchairs to dogs and families in need!
Ruff Rollin’ has been so honored to be a part of Mango’s Mission. We have been able to watch dogs gain back their dignity and finally live a quality life. Some of which, had been waiting years to achieve. One dog, Lucy, had waited 4 years to receive her wheelchair!
Every Freedom Wheels recipient has a very special, moving, story. And every deserving family has been even more dedicated to helping dogs in need, and sharing the love of animal therapy work. Mango has even inspired some of her wheelchair recipients to become therapy dogs themselves.
Mango’s work with veterans and dogs in need has been such an inspiration that she continues to build friendships across the globe! She inspires dogs and their humans to never give up, and to face adversity with courage. She makes our work here at Ruff Rollin’ even more gratifying, because of her generosity and compassion.
We hope you find her story as inspiring as we have.
